It’s a wrap for 2015 alright. What a year it was for the Marathi film industry! The longest running musical play of all times, Katyar Kaljat Ghusli, was made into a film. The play was terribly successful and the film did justice to it. It’s safe to say that the film and everyone in it, shone like diamonds. It got a lot of (rather nostalgic) love from the Marathi audience. It got a lot of critical acclaim as well.
However, a few praise-worthy performances did not get the attention they should’ve gotten. We cannot let the year go by without applauding these brilliant performances. Here are 6 (and then some more) underrated performances of the year 2015.
1. Geetanjali Kulkarni in Court:
Geetanjali Kulkarni plays a middle-class public prosecutor, and is a cog in the Indian judicial system. She has played this role with such finesse that there isn’t a frame in the movie where you are not convinced that she doesn’t really earn her living by being a lawyer. Straight-up super!
2. Sharad Ponkshe in Sandook:
Sharad Ponkshe has been an ace actor, be it in the controversial Me Nathuram Godse Boltoy or the emotional Tya Tighanchi Goshta. And he is nothing short of (f***ing) brilliant in Sandook as Shyamrao. We Maharashtrians love our Sharad Ponkshe. One can see why – the guy is a star!
3. Subodh Bhave in Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush
Subodh Bhave is basking in the warm glory of 2015. He has been a fantastic actor, always (remember Avantika?). This year though! Phew! He delivered two gems in Marathi film history, as a director – Katyar…, and Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush. He played the lead role in Lokmanya, and boy, did he kill it! Let’s hope to see more of Bhave and his genius in 2016 as well. Kudos!
4. Sonali kulkarni in Aga Bai Arechyaa 2
Aga Bai Arechyaa part one was one of the most loved movies of its time. In the second part, Sonali Kulkarni plays the adorable Shubhangi, with a very, umm, weird condition. She has a great comic timing and is so endearing! Full points to Kulkarni bai for this one.
5. Parth Bhalerao in Killa
All of 15, Parth is already getting noticed. After working with Bachchan Sr. in Bhootnath, he plays Bandya in the coming-of-age movie, Killa. He emotes so earnestly, his performance touches you through the screen. Bravo, little guy!
6. Sachin Khedekar in Rajwade and Sons
Sachin Khedekar has been shining silently for a long time now, and you cannot forget him. Adding to his envious body of work is his performance in Rajwade and Sons. Khedekar plays the eldest son of the affluent Rajwade family. His struggle with himself and his already-sealed destiny is, as they say, very real. Such a splendid performance!
We cannot end this piece without mentioning a few more stalwarts (you absolutely must check them out): Makrand Deshpande in Daagdi Chawl, Girish Kulkarni in Highway, Swapnil Joshi in Welcome Zindagi, Mukta Barve in Double Seat, and Sumeet Raghavan in Sandook.
Here’s sincerely hoping that we get to see more of these actors, and the new ones, in the coming year. Have a great 2016, you guys!
