702 Dixit’s: Film Review – A Good Whodunnit After A Long Time

Unknown - 01:06

Verdict: A well-executed Marathi suspense thriller you can’t miss

There have been very few attempts to make suspense thrillers in the Marathi film industry, let alone successful ones. 702 Dixit’s is a nail-biter and successfully manages to keep you on the edge of your seat. With a lot of Marathi movies releasing lately, a movie needs to stand out in order to be liked and appreciated by the audience. 702 Dixit’s looks appealing, sounds interesting, and more importantly, delivers what it promises – a suspenseful thriller that makes you bite your nails.

The film opens with a shocking shot of a young, lower-middle class girl falling off a high-rise building in a posh society. Inspector Patil (Jaywant Wadkar) and his team come to the crime scene for panchnama. Turns out that the deceased was a domestic help, who worked for the affluent Dixit family, who live in (you guessed it) flat number 702. Yash Dixit (Vijay Andalkar) is taken to the police station for giving an official statement, where is arrested without warning. Yash’s dedicated wife Kavya (Gauri Nigudkar) reaches the station, only to find that no one is willing to tell her what the charges on her husband are. Kavya calls her friend Riya (Pallavi Patil) for help. All the evidence and witnesses, including the dead girl’s father, are against Yash Dixit. However, Kavya is sure that her husband is innocent. Riya and Kavya then start off on a mission to save Yash and prove his innocence. What happens after that is 702 Dixit’s.

Although the style of story-telling is gripping, there are predictable things that happen – the hero is accused of this girl’s murder, the hero’s wife runs pillar to post to save the day, police does not cooperate much and so on. However, the up side is that the storytelling is fast-paced and there is never a dull moment. The story and its execution keeps you engaged throughout the movie. The editing is very crisp and gives the movie the fast pace that suspense/thriller movies cannot do without. The script should have taken care of a couple of loopholes that bother you in an otherwise gripping tale.

The music of the movie is just perfect and complements the story. There are no unnecessary songs. This was a great call by the 702 Dixit’s team, as songs in a suspense/thriller usually dilute the cinematic experience. However, the music of this movie helps in taking the story forward, and is not overwhelming. It takes the backseat and allows the movie to keep you entertained.

The performances are okay and they work. Pallavi Patil and Gauri Nigudkar make the movie very relatable with good performances. Jaywant Wadkar should start experimenting with roles other than playing a cop (good, bad, regardless). He is a good actor and needs to try different things for his fans.

Why You Should Watch This Movie

702 Dixit’s is a sincere attempt ta suspense after a long time (in Marathi cinema), and they have managed to make a good thriller movie. The story is good and it promises to hold your attention right from the beginning till the very end. Watch it with your family this weekend.
