A pair of slip-on shoes without laces, buckles or fastens of any kind.

ANKLE STRAP
Shoes with a single strap or multiple straps that wrap around the ankle and can be buckled. If there are straps or ribbons that can be wrapped around multiple times and tied the shoe is called an ankle wrap.

Comfortable heels have a height of 1.7 inches or less, which make them great work wear. The kitten heel gets its name from the fact that it was considered appropriate for younger girls who weren’t ready for stilettos yet.

PEEP-TOE
Shoes in which the toe box has a cut-out, so that the toes ‘peep’ through.

SLINGBACK
An open-backed shoe with a strap that crosses behind the heel but does not completely encircle the ankle. Slingback straps can be elastic or buckled, so the length of the strap can be adjusted.

Wear it with: A shirt-dress goes great with a pair of sling-backs for an easy evening out.

BALLET FLATS
When the shoe includes a very low or completely flat heel, a closed toe and low-cut that reveals the front of the foot. These are also known as ballerina flats or dolly flats.

WEDGES
Shoes in which the heel runs along the length of the foot, from front to back. This results in the heel forming a triangular or wedge shape.
If the wedge heel appears with a platform front the shoe is called a platform wedge.

MARY JANES
A closed toe, low-cut shoe with a strap horizontally across the bridge of the foot. The shoe was originally worn by children and todays Mary Janes are modelled on that style.

Get to Know: Shenali Sema

The former creative head at Morphe, Shenali is also a dog-lover, textile artist, design researcher and developer, who has another project under her wings that she can’t wait to tell us about.

Tell us a little about Morphe, its aesthetic and your role.
Morphe is housed under one of the largest export and production houses in India, Creative Impex, which has been around for over 25 years. Morphe was established in 2008 and I came onboard in 2013 as creative head. Our approach to design is guided by the paradoxes of the modern condition – clean lines with complexity in the detail and contemporized surface developments. Our signature style is a repertoire of surface techniques. When you see our products, you instantly know they’re Morphe.

How did you grow to love design?
I come from Nagaland – a region known for its aesthetic sense, rich craft and textile heritage. Growing up in such a culture, I developed an innate sense of design. I studied at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad and focused on textiles, which influenced my understanding of design. This was further honed when I went to study fashion at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.

You recently started a design studio. What’s the idea behind it?
Untitled Co. is a design cell that I’ve co-founded with my friend and colleague, Rinzin Lama. It’s a platform where we collaborate with designers and consult on design conceptualization, research and development. Our mission is to create ‘Made in India’ pieces of the finest craftsmanship and promote the manufacturing of premium products in India. (Instagram @untitledco__)

A piece of advice to someone just starting out
I don’t think any amount of advice is going to prepare you for what’s in store. I guess the one piece of advice I’d share would be – have a business model, a well-oiled system (at every level of execution) in place and a truckload of patience. That’s three!

Going forward, what are your plans?
We plan to expand Untitled Co. in terms of production and possibly start an ethical luxury label. Through our products and the way we choose to function, we want to promote a lifestyle and explore ways for us, for other young creative professionals and our clients to simplify their lives, cultivate community and spend more time with friends and family.

12 Fashion Rules To Live By

When it comes to fashion, there are set formulas. It works every time too – wear stripes to look taller, black to look skinny, play up your dangly earrings at the cocktail party etc. But fashion is also about departing from tradition, breaking style myths and go into an avant garden space where rules make no sense. This year, we’re revamping the style sheet. Here are 12 fashion rules to get you through 2016 in style.

1)  Invest in good underwear
What you wear inside defines you on the outside! Those unseemly panty lines, ill-fitting push-up bras… banish them! Invest in two things: well-fitting cotton panties for comfort and a good nude bra to go with your every outfit.

 2) Block heels are for work and play
So you need a set of heels that are comfortable, but not boring; glamorous but not OTT, and functional but not traditional. Your perfect match? Block heels.  3) Add some camel to your wardrobe

Don’t be afraid to play with your colours. Who said pink and orange are way too bright to be a team, or that fuschia and tangerine never go together?  5) Accentuate just one feature at a time
Whether it’s your decolletage or your long, long legs, highlight just one feature at any point of time, so you’re drawing the eye to where you want attention to go. If you’re wearing a plunging neckline, balance it out with full-length trousers. If you’re wearing a short, short skirt, team it with a turtleneck or a mandarin collar top. Remember: scanty on top and scanty on the bottom is skanky all over.

  6) When in doubt, wear monotone.
Going top-to-toe in one colour is no fashion faux pas. Minimalism is the name of the game and you can comfortably choose to just wear one colour all over. Punctuate your look with a fringed bag or shoes with a big of diamante.

7) Accessories can save the day
Heading to a posh do in a dowdy work dress? Let accessories be your fairy godmother. Stack a bunch of metal cuffs on your arms, slip on some cocktail rings, layer some necklaces – preferably not all together – and no one’s ever going to notice you’re not dressed for the party.

 8) Print clash is the new cool
Stars and stripes go together well, and not just on the American flag. Mixing diverse prints is a skill and the payoff is gold if you’re able to carry it off.Just be judicious in your choice. 9) Invest in faux fur and leather – they’re your luxe pieces

How To: Get The Tri-Colour Manicure

Feeling patriotic? We’ve got the perfect Republic Day nail-spiration for you.

Tricolour Plaid
Step 1:

Paint on a base colour – we went with orange.

Step 2:

Using a fine brush and green nail colour, paint a large checked pattern, making sure you have enough gap between the lines.

Step 3:

Using white nail enamel, paint between the green lines to create another interwoven checked pattern. Let it dry and top with a clear varnish.

Ethnic Ikat
Step 1:

Start by painting the nail in a base colour of your choice. We picked orange.

Step 2:

Draw two green chevron stripes on the base. Working fast (before the colour dries), use a toothpick to feather the stripe outwards into the ikat weave pattern.

Step 3:

Add stripes in white below the green and repeat the feathering process. Allow the colour to dry and finish with a glossy top coat.
