Beauty Trends From Instagram to Inspire You in 2016

Unknown - 20:37

Every year around this time we all make resolutions about going to the gym, eating right, drinking less, getting organized. This year we should forget about all that which will be given up in a day or two and start trying out new trends. You’ve always toyed with the idea of dying your hair, or getting away from the same everyday hairstyle. The trends starting this year are more manageable and will look great on anyone. Don’t shy away from scissors or color. It is so cliché but I will say it anyway; start this NEW Year with a new look!

Holding-sunset-hair

Sunset Hair: After rainbow roots, mermaid hair, sand art hair, tie-dye hair, glitter roots and hair strobing we have now been given #SunsetHair. People are rushing to have their strands dyed with the colors of the sunset. Blurs off yellow, orange, blue, pink and purple. Although I am a huge fan of color trends, this just seems like rainbow hair to me. If it’s your first time I would suggest starting of with gradual coloring and then going into the heavy stuff.

Holding-strobing

Strobing: Thanks to Kim K and her genius MUA Mario Dedivanovic contouring was the breakthrough make up buzzword of 2015 and is here to stay. Strobing has the same concept but you only need a highlight powder for this sexy dewy look. Using a slightly shimmery color, close to your skin tone, very lightly brush the highlighter where light hits your face. (The bridge of your nose, the top V (pout) of your lips, the highest point on your cheekbones, your brow bone, chin and forehead) (Tip: Finish this look off with matte blush and bronzer so you get glowing skin without the shine.)

Holding-hunHun: Aka half bun, this new style is similar to the topknot. For best results spray on texturizing spray to the top part of your hair, create a half messy bun and pin it down. You can place the hun on the very top of your head or the middle of your crown. Too add a bit more style, try French braiding half your hair and end in a messy hun.

Holding-lobLob: The Lob, this year’s tour de force cut. Cutting ones hair can be a traumatic experience. I know my hairstylist has to prepare herself for my anxiety-ridden haircut mood. Anyone can get this cut, no matter what face shape you have especially if you don’t want to go for a bob. The lob goes from straight cut to collar bone length layers. It is a great way to spruce up your hairstyle for the summer.

Holding-negative-spaceNegative Space: Minimal and sophisticated. Make sure your nails are clean 24/7 for this look. The idea is to leave a strip unpainted while doing your nails. Chevron nail art works best for this. The trend was out in force on the Mabille, Noon by Noor and Lhuillier SS16 runways. This is a great way to update your look and experiment with nail art.

Holding-brondeBronde: Blond? Brown? Why not both? If you aren’t too confident in changing your hair color drastically bronde could be the ideal technique to try out. Bronde is suited best for warm skin tones and is very complimentary for older people. Fusing blonde and brown colors creates a flatter sun kissed color. Now both blondes and brunettes can have all the fun!

6 Memorable characters of 2015 (South Films)

Unknown - 20:00
Every year, along with brand new releases, new actors are introduced to the film industry. Some of these actors strive to find a position in the industry, while others make an effortless mark with their performances. However, the best quality of an actor is to completely immerse himself/herself into the skin of the character, and make the audience admire him/her.  2015 wasn’t just a good year for blockbusters films, but also for artists who had meaty roles to play. 2015 gave us characters that were most talked about and those who fit the role perfectly. Here are the most enduring and unique characters in films of 2015.

1. Malar from Premam

Apart from becoming Malayalam cinema’s blockbuster film in 2015, director Alphonse Putharen’s Premam gave us several simple and sweet characters. One of the most memorable characters of the film was Malar. In an industry where heroines are caked with make up, Malar (Sri Pallavi) was presented as a simple girl next-door. With curly locks, no make-up, and pimples; Malar was one character everyone fell in love with. Youngsters dedicated a consiiderable amount of memes to her. She is one character who broke the Internet in 2015.

2. Siddharth Abhimanyu from Thani Oruvan

Aravind Swamy charmed and amazed us as the suave yet conniving businessman in Thani Oruvan. He played the role of Siddharth Abhimanyu, a sophisticated villain who looked dapper in suits and carried himself with elan. His character is Thani Oruvan made the intense cat-and-mouse chase seem like a thrill ride. Evil has never looked so good!

3. Saravanan from Aambala

Artists are remembered for the intense roles they play, and the definition they add to the character. One actor who broke such a stereotype is Vishal. Appearing mostly in action-oriented film, Vishal starred in Sundar C’s Aambala, that saw him perform an action-sequence like no other. He sat on flying sumo, and threatened the bad guys from mid-air. This light and effortless act, features him in the list of most memorable characters.

 4. Maari from Maari

The movie may not have received a positive response from critics, but that didn’t stop the film from gaining attention. Donning round sunglasses, bright coloured shirts, and a handle-bar moustache, Dhanush’s look as Maari – the local rowdy – caught everybody’s attention. His signature punchline – Senjiruven, was another noteworthy trademark, that became everybody’s favourite punch line.

5. Kadhambari from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan

Nayanthara gave several hits this year, one of her most-memorable performances include her role as Kadhambari in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. Her performance was full of conviction, as the girl who believed in love. She was a girl on a mission. How can we forget the famous line in the film about her – "Kadu Ma…Are you okay baby?"

6. Bhallala Deva from Baahubali

Fables are engrossing in many ways. One of the main things we love about them is the battle between good and evil (between the protagonist and antagonist), who have equally strong characterization. An antagonist who appeared in a fable-inspired epic and won incredible attention is Bhallala Deva. Played by Rana Daggubati, Bhallala Deva Deva was strong, cruel and evil rule of a Kingdom. His mighty physique, powerful body language and the smirk on his face made a massive impression.

Point Break: Film Review – Old Wine in a New Bottle

Unknown - 07:24

Verdict: An out-and-out action entertainer.

There’s no better way to start off a new year than with an action-packed entertainer. Fortunately, Ericson Core’s remake of Point Break is here to kickstart 2016.

The film follows FBI agent and former extreme sportsman Utah (Luke Bracey) as he goes undercover to investigate a group of ecoterrorists. He initially suspects that the group, led by Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez), intends to commit a series of heists. However, Utah soon finds out that they have other plans. What follows is a fast-paced, aesthetically pleasing journey of adventure, self-discovery and spirituality.

Though it is billed as a remake, Point  Break has few similarities to the original from 1991. The films share a basic premise, but that’s where the resemblance ends. Whether this is a good thing or not is for the viewer to decide.

However, if there’s one thing that both versions of the film have in common, it’s the quality of the actors’ performances. Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez are remarkable in their respective parts. Furthermore, they share a rapport that makes every scene a delight to watch. Though we wish that the story built up to their bromance a little more, it’s safe to say that their friendship is one of the film’s highlights. Teresa Palmer is also a delight onscreen, inspite of the fact that she is criminally underutilized.

The performances, as good as they are, cannot hold a candle to the film’s production value and stunts. Each frame in Point Break is straight out of a breathtaking painting. This makes it impossible to look away from the screen, even for a split second. Combine that with thrilling stunts, and you have every action buff’s dream come true!

Point Break, on certain occasions, tries to be much deeper than it actually is. Unfortunately, this slows down the film, making you wonder if it was better off just embracing that it is an out-and-out action entertainer. This is, however, easy to ignore in an otherwise interesting film.

If you like action films and want to enjoy an engaging thriller this weekend, Point Break is your best bet. Though the film might not live up to the classic it is based on, it is still worth a watch.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

An action-packed entertainer, Point Break features compelling characters, breathtaking landscapes and awe-inspiring stunts. If you’re a fan of the genre, don’t miss this one.

2015: The Disappointment is Real

Unknown - 06:45

Yup, it is the last day of the year. There has been enough written about the best of everything 2015 had to offer. All the bad news have been carefully left behind; for good reasons, of course. However, a dampener is always lurking around the corner.

From the shiny, happy streets of Bollywood came some of the worst delivery of great promises this year. And they must be talked about. Lest we forget how Team Marketing may steam ahead full charge but come Friday, the disappointment is very, very real! So, the next time Aamir Khan shows up with a new hairstyle or a fresh spin on facial hair, be scared for there might be a Ghajini coming.

Bombay Velvet

Pha seForget it‘! We didn’t have to wait too long into 2015 for this disaster of epic proportions. And before this one hit the screens, boy, were there promises made! The larger than life sets, Karan Johar “like you’ve never seen him before” (and we wished it stayed that way), Ranbir “Say-hello-to-Tony-Montana’s-little-friend” Kapoor etc. etc. And then15 minutes into the movie, you went ‘meh!

An emotional social media rant by director Anurag Kashyap post the movie’s sinking is all the entertainment Bombay Velvet provided.

Brothers

<This conversation may or may not be real>

Expert 1: Let’s remake a movie.

Expert 2: Again?

Expert 1: Yes!

Expert 2: Ok!

Expert 1: Let’s remake ‘Warrior’?

Expert 2: Warri-what?

Expert 1: Never mind that. Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, MMA, full fighting.

Expert 2: Hook kya hai?

Expert 1: It is about two brothers fighting it out in a wrestling ring.

Expert 2: Set! Let’s call the movie ‘Brothers’.

Expert 1: Dooood! Nobody could have seen that one coming.

Sidharth Malhotra: I call dibs for Tom Hardy’s role!

Akshay Kumar: GODDAMMIT!

Jackie Shroff: afssoihrevbvervdfvdfv Maavshi c@#%#@%$#

We may groan but we will never stop enjoying the idea of a remake. Idea, mind you. When Brothers eventually hit the screen and we sat gaping at the screen trying to figure exactly what Jackie Shroff was trying to say and why Raj Zutshi and whatshisname sitting next to him were trying to outdo each other being silly outside a fighting ring, it was just too late. JUST. TOO. LATE.

Phantom

Our good friend Kabir Khan will never let us forget how he understands the world’s problems (read terrorism) better than anybody else. We try to tell him otherwise but he doesn’t listen. The man had just delivered a blockbuster with Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which of course wasn’t Citizen Kane but then…BHAI! Phantom soon followed.

We were promised a story we wished was true. Then, maybe more people watched a YouTube video featuring a nobody from Pakistan getting mad at Saif Ali Khan and Phantom than the actual movie. Who knows?!

Any resemblance to a 2005-released Steven Spielberg film is of course, coincidental.

Shaandaar

A shaandaar teaser followed by a loud trailer followed director Vikas Bahl‘s last winning effort that was Queen. Shaandaar was “India’s first wedding destination movie” (err what?). Shahid Kapur and Alia Bhatt went to town promoting this one dancing, singing, spreading raita and what not? Come October, come a BIG STRAIGHT FACE!

Vikas Bahl later declared something to the effect of how people couldn’t really figure out the movie and he expects the movie to have a cult following in a few years. Well, at least he got the former right. Blame it all on Sanjay Kapoor!

Tamasha

Not too long ago, we went to Spain on a road trip with three friends in a movie that made as much sense as the three friends. Imtiaz Ali would have nothing of it. He probably enjoyed Asterix and probably thought Asterix in Corsica was more fun than Asterix in Spain. We probably agree. Hence, Tamasha in Corsica. Probably fun? Nope!

It could have brought back together on screen an actor and his ex-girlfriend and even promised the same chemistry. It also brought back Ranbir Kapoor‘s characters’ age-old issue of being clueless in love and life. C’mon! Even Hrithik Roshan learnt after just one Lakshya.

There you have it. Very honorable mentions and salutes to Aishwarya Rai’s comeback in a green movie and Vikram Bhatt’s Institute of Filmmaking; here’s to a happy New Year and more disappointments.

Glimpses of the OYO InstaMeet in Bangalore

Unknown - 02:49

We conducted our second #OYOInstaMeet and our first in Bangalore in the first week of December. We chose Pottery Town as our hunting ground, a place inhabited by potters and artisans that exudes a unique charm and remains still unexplored by many. We took up this opportunity and gave young photographers a chance to capture perhaps the most fascinating images of their lives. Ankit Dhame who was at that time travelling to Bangalore decided to lead the group. Presenting some interesting perspectives about the event, straight from the horses’ mouth.   Fellow Instagrammers at Pottery Town,Bangalore. Image by Ankit    Fellow Instagrammers at Pottery Town, Bangalore. I knew I remembered just a thing that there is a shoot in pottery town. So I put the location on my phone GPS and went to the pottery town and saw that it was just a small area probably a couple of streets and one main road that connected to the other part of town. Capturing fleeting moments of another Year…!

Unknown - 00:46

Gain-Loss, Love-Hate, Rise-Fall….
The fragmented list goes on and on
Memories of light and shadow smears me to a land unknown
And it leaves me alone with a quenched soul

Time is calculated among us as year, month, week, day, hour, minute, second, and Nano second. We give so much preference to time and its sub-parts that sometimes we just forget the magic of life. Every second is precious and it really passes with a magic spell. Once a year ends, I love to take a flashback of it, rounding up which I paraphrase that I really survived another year with aches & burns in one hand and joy and pride in another. I feel like a victor as I was able to handle all that life made me witness. This shows that everything works in balance and you cannot escape this poise.

So another year has just passed and you are in a different chapter now. Generally, people party hard on a 31st December night to forget the past regrets and welcome the New Year with new vigor. And then they indulge into New Year Resolutions which work or not I don’t know as this vagabond soul never ever planned anything in life. This is basically everyone’s same old story.

Aren’t you all tired of the same routine? The same parties with old and new people, the same boozing sessions, the same oath taking, the same mad dance at 12 midnight!!!

How many of you have actually reviewed your deeds of the past year 2015? I am 100% sure that all you folks can manage to remember is your 31st December night last year, some important dates of promotion or engagement-marriage, and similar type of events. Is that all in the name of happiness? What I intend to say here is – happiness is calculated in these areas only, and rest part of the year was either full of complaints or ignorance.

  1. Don’t you remember that unknown face in the metro who saved your unzipped bag with important stuffs from falling down just before the doors closed?

  2. Are you sentient of the fact that the next door aunty had to postpone her prayer hours as she dislikes the rock music played by you which is noise to her?

  3. Do you remember the day when you had a good scolding from your manager for deleting one important file? The vagrant boy of your area pulled it from your laptop with minimal effort as he is a genius.

  4. Do you remember those chilly winter mornings when you woke up the rickshaw driver from his peaceful sleep so that he can take you to your destination?

  5. Of course you don’t even know that mysterious flute player of Dilli-Haat, who played a piece of soothing music from a childhood favorite movie and made you recall your school friends. You called up many of your old buddies after that and planned numerous get together!

  6. The ageing maid sustained many rainy days with a torn umbrella and reached fully drenched at your place just to make soft chapatis for your dinner. May be you don’t even know which bus she has to take to commute!

  7. Your mom woke up at 4 in a Sunday morning to cook meal for you and your friends so that you can have an enjoyable Sunday picnic.

I have just made a list of 7 normal occurrences which happen to us day in and day out but we don’t notice them. Just pause for a moment amidst the buzzing party and really remember these small incidents of your daily life and say a “THANK YOU” and “SORRY” as per the situation – at least in your mind. If possible send New Year Gifts to those people whom you are thankful for contributing to a successful 2015. That I would call a perfect bid adieu to 2015.

These kinds of tiny episodes do teach us a lot about ourselves, our nature, greed, tolerance, etc. which in a long run shapes our whole character. In fact the fun would be greater if you can maintain a journal of the happenings of each and every day of the 365 days journey of a year. In the year-end, while scrolling through the pages, you would find many such events which have made you a better person. Many faces would crowd in your memory who donated a bit of themselves in your road. You would then hardly require anyone to commemorate a new year as your room is fully stuck with the facades from memory-land.

Personally, I would like to thank one of my dearest friends who abetted me to transform my house into a loving home. The morning tea-breakfast, lunch, evening tea, dinner, countless boozing sessions with non-stop arguments as well as silent talks with that person chiseled me a lot. I wonder my solitude would have missed a lot of themes without this person. I am grateful to you and wish all the true happiness for you.

So now, tell me, how many of you are thinking and thanking the last year for making you encounter such wonderful experiences? Remember some more and give a standing ovation with a big smile to say BID ADIEU 2015.

New Year House-Party Essentials

Unknown - 20:46

2016 is almost here. But before we commence the new year, we need to brace ourselves for the NYE bash. They say that the first day of the new year sets the precedence for the rest of the year. There’s just too much pressure. And of course, around this time party prices shoot up and most of us end up burning a deep hole into our pockets. The easy solution is to have a house party! Sometimes, the only feasible solution.

But have a successful home party you need certain things. We have a small checklist for you to plan your house party! So, scroll down and get your party planning started.

Theme

Have a theme, go for a costume party or do one better, and have a pyjama party.

Party Playlist

You need to sort out the music in advance. Get the speakers in place and create a playlist with a mix of the best party numbers.

Enough Food

Food! Yes, the most important thing in a party. Get finger foods and sort out extra food for the post midnight, after party chats.

Variety of Alcoholic & Non-Alcoholic Drinks

Arrange for variety. Make sure you know what your guests want and have stock-up in advance. In case you find it unfeasible to get alcohol yourself, BYOB is a great option too.

Games you can play

Home parties get boring if you’ve invited people who don’t know each other. Get them to mingle. The best way to do it is have drinking games. There’re great game ideas available online.

Go, figure out the best to-do’s for your party. Have a great NYE!

Bollywood’s Very Best in 2015

Unknown - 05:30

On the last day of the year, I’ve decided to chalk up a list of outstanding technical and artistic performances for the year in Hindi cinema. It has been a very good year for Bollywood overall, with a fair amount of content-driven stories going hand-in-hand with the obvious commercial potboilers. For every Bajrangi Bhaijaan, there has been a Piku. For every Badlapur, there has been a Masaan. And for every Baahubali, there has been a Bajirao Mastani

The trend, however, has been slightly startling: Successful auteurs and directors like Dibakar Bannerjee, Anurag Kashyap and, to an extent, Imtiaz Ali, haven’t been able to replicate their previous success, while new filmmakers and writers have come in to take the year by storm. This is an encouraging sign, and proves that even the best of them can only be as good as their last film. Even the brainless Khan vehicles like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Dilwale haven’t exactly set the box office on fire, and have reiterated that it is important to put a little bit of heart into the blood, sweat and tears most teams work to make these movies. In between, however, silly erotic thrillers like Hate Story 3 and any Sunny Leone film continue to make money, solely on basis of the frisky college couples and frustrated men that fill the matinee shows on the weekend mornings.

Here’s a list of categories, along with the winner and a Special mention for each of them:

Best Screenplay: Vishal Bharadwaj for TALVAR

Special Mention: Varun Grover for MASAAN

Two of the finest Hindi films of the year have banked, first and foremost, on the written word. Scripts continue to make all the difference, as even proven by Juhi Chaturvedi’s uncanny texture-capturing lines in Piku, and Sriram Raghavan’s Tarantinosque subversions in Badlapur.

Best Editing: Namrata Rao for TITLI

Special Mention: Nitin Baid for MASAAN

Titli is much about what happens off screen as it is about the brutalities that occur on. A prime example is the unbearable wrist-breaking moment, where Rao cuts the scene into parts that make us cringe simply by the power of suggestion – finally showing a broken wrist in the end.

Best Sound Design: Subhash Sahu for NH10

Special Mention: Madhu Apsara for BADLAPUR

Both dark, twisted mainstream films are pretty much defined by the subtle variations in their soundscapes for each environment, and a good sense of how to mix a pin-threading background score to elevate the tension.

Best Cinematography: Sudeep Chatterjee for BAJIRAO MASTANI

Special Mention: Ravi Varman for TAMASHA

Bajirao Mastani succeeded at what it set out to achieve simply because of its vast imagery, well-lit slow-mo sequences and extravagant indoor flourishes. And Varman’s Corsica visuals in Tamasha play in stark contrast with the flashbacks and grey-blue indoor palette of corporate Delhi life.

Best Supporting Actor (Male): Ranvir Shorey for TITLI

Special Mention: Nawazuddin for BADLAPUR

Quite simply the antagonists of 2015, both in their own perverse ways.

Best Supporting Actor (Female): Richa Chadda for MASAAN

Special Mention: Radhika Apte for BADLAPUR

Chadda is the face of suppressed passion and ambition in small-town India, while Apte excels in her role as the frightened trophy wife of an ex-convict.

Best Actor (Male): Amitabh Bachchan for PIKU

Special Mention: Irffan Khan for TALVAR

It’s impossible not to empathize with Bachchan, who plays the greatest fear of every human: An old, crabby parent refusing to be independent. Irffan, meanwhile, defines the soul, pulse and stand that the brave makers of Talvar set out to capture.

Best Actor (Female): Kalki for MARGARITA WITH A STRAW

Special Mention: Deepika Padukone for PIKU

Kalki nails it as the cerebral palsy-afflicted young girl who has her sexual and spiritual awakening while studying abroad. Deepika, meanwhile, continues her hot streak by playing the exasperated titular daughter to Bachchan’s hypochondriac, stubborn ways.

Best Film: TITLI

The best Hindi film of the year is also the toughest to watch, and the most difficult to fathom. A far cry from the harmless, quirky dysfunctional Indian families we usually see on screen, Titli is a stellar debut by Kanu Behl.

Best Director: Sriram Raghavan for BADLAPUR

Special Mention: Kanu Behl for TITLI

Mr. Raghavan finally achieves what he perhaps always set out to achieve – a potent, pulpy, uncompromising package of visceral imagery, addictive sounds and driven, relentless characters, without having to worry about the commercial or entertainment aspect. Because, honestly, when is an all-out mainstream revenge saga not fun to watch? He turns Bollywood tropes on their heads, is crafty as usual and fashions quite an ode to his passion for the movies

5 WTF Moments from 2015

Unknown - 05:29

2015 was a mixed bag. There were moments our country shone bright (remember, Mangalyaan?), there were moments we were reminded by nature the importance of standing together and helping each other (Chennai and Nepal disasters). There were times we felt proud of our technological advancements when Cochin got the world’s first all-solar powered airport. And then there were other moments. The ones that wiped the smiles off our faces and we were forced to roll our eyes.

We guffawed and we also went "WTF?". We have picked the top five times the world, our country and our fellow countrymen made us go whoa!

Anushka Sharma ODI backlash

When Anushka Sharma was blamed for India’s poor performance at the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Deepika Padukone’s TOI controversy

When The Times just wasn’t with the times!

Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s comment in support of Salman Khan

When someone suffered a heavy dose of his foot in his mouth. Or, was it a case of acute attention seeking syndrome?

Aamir Khan’s reaction to the AIB Roast

Aamir felt "disappointed by it" and the rest of the country by his opinion.

#SanskariJamesBond

Broken resolutions

broken resolutions

The onset of the deadly date (31st December) calls for a task that remains incomplete for days to come. The days stretch to months and months stretch to another year. This task is fondly known as “resolutions”. Since we started putting two and two together, it was drilled in our mind that resolutions are the door to a “New Year New You” campaign.

Here’s to the most popular New Year resolutions that never made it past 20th January:

  1. Studying and coming first in class

This was the sequel to “Santa gifts only good girls and boys”. If Santa forgot to gift you, you immediately took upon the task of writing impossible resolutions. To make it past the month of January, you would paste the resolution list on the refrigerator and closet.

  1. Losing weight

A task that starts after gorging on everything edible at the New Year party and ends up with gaining another kg at office party. You complete a full circle and realize this task is impossible to finish and leave it for next year’s list.

  1. Learning time management

The need for time management begins when you snooze your alarm three times only to realize you are already late for office. Things at office aren’t smooth either, you forget to make the presentation on time and hence the task of “learning time management” rises out of the burial grounds of your worth ethics.

  1. No more partying

All because it’s time to focus on your career and settle down. With the amount of lecture you get from your parents, you decide to give a gift of “no more parties” to them. This of course won’t be viable for more than a week.

  1. Being nice to the neighbour

No matter how many times their pet “freshens” up your garden, it is always important to Love Thy Neighbour. It’s time to start being nice to your neighbour who tolerated your “I am a rock guitarist” phase.
