Celeb Speak: Madboy/Mink

Unknown - 20:30

Neysa Mendes sits Madboy/Mink down for a chat about their second EP Union Farm.

Holding
Imaad Shah and Saba Azad – Madboy/Mink to the rest of the world – bring the fun back to Indian indie with their brand new EP Union Farm. The duo, who started making music together in 2013, keep it upbeat on their latest, where their brand of nu disco meets funk with a playful dose of electro swing. They both have their roots in theatre and film, and the result is a slickly styled, energetic live act inspired by punk rock and cabaret jazz.

Union Farm is a new sound for M/M. Tell us about it.
[With this album], we’ve been leaning a lot more towards sludgy guitars and slightly raw production inspired by late-70s NYC disco punk and a bit of mid-70s Indian disco. And while we aren’t doing either of those sounds, we’re drawing from this stuff in order to create a more complete picture of the ‘Madboy/Mink’ sound.

M/M would lend itself beautifully to a silent film. Any plans on taking the band beyond just the music?
That’s a huge compliment! For us, the golden era of cinema was definitely the silent era, and we have always been pretty inspired by old cinema styles – film noir, blaxploitation, expressionistic horror, 70s Indian cabaret music, etc. It’s funny you say that. Our live show is definitely evolving into a theatrical exercise – Saba is a dancer and we are both part of theatre companies. The idea would be to try and blur the lines between music concert and theatre. To have complete control over all aspects of lighting, stage design, costume, and to be able to use the stage space in a way that a play or a dance troupe would use it.

You both act, as well as produce music – is there a specific influence that one art form lends to the other?
We do look at our music as being inspired by cinematic forms; however, let’s just say that the kind of acting work that is asked of you here in Bombay has absolutely no connection to our aesthetic as a band. But our acting work on stage has definitely helped two normally very reticent and self-conscious people to breathe easier in their own skin – which definitely helps when trying to deliver our music confidently to massive hordes of people!
