Rang de Basantirang de basantiMost of us have probably watched this movie and 9 out of 10 people who watched this movie loved it, it was a fresh and younger approach to patriotism.  Through the movie, we see the young protagonists slowly adapting the idealism and national fervour of the forefather they are enacting for a documentary. A tale of friendship, love, nationalist, patriotism, courage, determination and above all, loyalty, this movie has something for everyone.

Mangal Pandey: The Risingmangal pandeyWe have all studied the history lessons where Mangal Pandey attacked British officers in what came to be the instigating act of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 or the First War of Indian Independence. Aamir Khan does a sensational job in bringing those history lessons to life in his portrayal of the life, struggles and eventual battles of Mangal Pandey. A must watch for history buffs.

LagaanlagaanOne of the epic movies of all time, one of the most brilliant movies made in recent times, this Aamir Khan starer combines two things Indians love most – Cricket and our beloved country. Set in the Victorian period of India’s British Raj, the film captures India’s first hints at revolution and uprising through a village challenging the British to a game of cricket to avoid paying outrageous taxes.

Legend of Bhagat Singhlegend of bhagat singhBhagat Singh, played by Ajay Devgan decides things need to change, which is why he organizes and leads a revolution against the ruling British. It details out how Singh’s views about the British were shaped and consequently the actions he took regarding the same.

ChhittagongchitagongChittagong is a 2012 Indian historical war drama film. It stars  Manoj Bajpai in the lead role and is based upon events of British India’s (now in Bangladesh) Chittagong Uprising. This movie won the 60th National Film Award for the Best Debut Film of a Director.

GandhigandhiThis Oscar winning movie follows Gandhiji’s life and trials in his non-violent movement towards Indian independence. Need we say more?

BorderborderBased on  the Indo-Pakistan was of 1971, the movie was an adaption of events that took place during the Battle of Longewala. Starring some of our most beloved action heroes (Sunny Deol, Suneil Shetty, Jackie Shroff) the movie is an insightful look into the bravery of the Indian Armed Forces and will make you appreciate them a whole lot more!

SwadesswadesA story about an NRI who returns home only to have his perspective and life changed forever, the movie rings with a subtle undertone of patriotism and is also an interesting look at an outsiders encounters with the harsh realities of village life. Definitely one to watch, this movie has acclaimed cult following in South Asia and obviously, across India.

LakshyalakshayA classic coming-of-age tale about a nonchalant boy who joins the Armed Forces on a wild impulse but finds inspiration, courage and commitment in his time there.

AirliftairliftRecently released, based on the real life incidents that took place in Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion, the movie talks about how one businessman who used to identify himself as a Kuwaiti finds his patriotic spirit in the face of disaster and rallies for the entire Indian community in Kuwait, eventually leading them to safety in what is till date the largest airlift evacuation in history.

Won’t a patriotic movie marathon make your day perfect? What are you waiting for, prep up…now!

There, admitted. We are not good at accomplishing New Year resolutions, but then, who is?! 😉

Given our record, we have even made resolutions for 2016, though we assume, the new ones will have to wait their time in line, while we get these old resolutions right, such as Remembering to write 2016 instead of 2015 and being more creative with leave excuses.

To add on, a few different resolutions have also been included by us, of course food related, given the kind of food enthusiasts we are.

Tell a dear friend who doesn’t like to try different cuisines to explore the shades of deliciousness and find the shade he loves or at least goes crazy trying! In fact, we ourselves are planning to go on to try flavoursome goodness!

Try

Here are the New Year Resolutions which a foodie can never break.

  • Try one thing you have never eaten before, every week

  • Get something other than fries on the side

It cannot be denied that Indians best display their love in the form of food. It is something that is synonymous with Love – that is the beauty of India. As the dialect changes every twenty kilometres in India, the delight in every bite also gets a new twist. Traditional Indian food has got a modern makeover with vegetable stuffed chapatti being tagged as a wrap that makes you roll.

As we know, in winter, our body craves for rich food that proffers warmth and nourishment – meals packed with dry fruits are thus, a hit during this time of the year. Gajar Ka Halwa, Makki ki Roti & Sarson Ka Saag, Rogan Josh, Undhiyo, to name a few, are some of the must try traditional Indian winter dishes.winter dishes

Importance of winter food

Winter is the best season to binge on seasonal delicacies that are not only finger-licking good, but are also stuffed with numerous benefits that help you stay warm and strengthen your immunity. Winter chills may sometimes lead to mineral deficiencies in the body which must be supplemented through proper diet such as carrots, mustard, etc, as these are famous for their nutritional properties.

The Undying Charm

Winter foods have always been a huge hit among the masses. Travel back in time and remember the good old days when your grandmother fed you with delicious winter food that comforted you to no bounds, and narrated those legendary tales of food during bedtime. Yummy nostalgia, isn’t it?

However, Indian winter food has travelled a long way in the post-Independence era and has enticed foodies all over the world mainly for its nutritional and traditional values. Every dish has a tongue-tingling effect on food lovers’ palates.

Evolution of Indian Food Culture

Over the years, the food culture in India has evolved extensively. Though, the travel of several decades has led to the change in quality and the methods of preparation, but the love and warmth behind every dish remains the same. No matter where you are and where you belong, the love for food keeps transforming lives.

Since as long as we remember, winter is apparently the best time to enjoy a hearty meal of gobi paratha, mooli paratha and polish it off then with a plate of moong or gajar halwa. This is also the time to have your share of green leafy vegetables. If you are a fruit lover, you would love winters for the oranges, grapefruits, guavas, amlas it gets, and of course lemons – all of these contribute to your body’s need for Vitamin C.

While Northern India loves to nosh on Sarson ka Saag and Makki Di Roti; the flavours of Gujarat are submerged in undhiyu – a spicy vegetable dish. Southern India is a fan of Rasam. Many Indians love a meal of bajra ki roti, lehsun chutney as winter comforts too!

Winters impact different people differently:

United families and Nuclear families: Be it joint families or nuclear families, soaking in the sun and eating jaggery with peanut stuffed desserts is much awaited. Share the joy of elaborate cooking is what every family enjoys.united family vs nuclear family

Sharing food with neighbour Vs sharing food with colleagues: While neighbours used to be an extended family earlier, now that we spend most of our time in offices, our colleagues have become a part of our lives.sharing

Foods to avoid congestion during winters

Unknown - 01:45

Whenever winter approaches the first thing which gets affected due to the change in weather is our immunity. And in order to build up good immunity to face the weather we tend to long for food which might help us boost our immunity. We generally think that sipping a rich mug of coffee and wiping off a plate of fried snacks are the ideal ways to warm self up. Let us break it to you that all those years you thought are the comfort foods have actually been making you fall ill. Have there been times when after sipping or munching on your favourite food follows a pain in the neck, literally? If yes, this is a must read.

We shortlisted some of the desired delights so that you can subtract these unhealthy foods from your diet to prevent cold and other viral diseases in winters.winter cough

1. Dairy products

Dairy products can assist in thickening of mucus. So if you’re feeling congested then consuming-milk based products can make it even worse. Apart from thickening your mucus and saliva, they can also make swallowing difficult causing pain in throat.

2. Coffee

Beverages like tea, coffee and soft drinks contain caffeine, which is a diuretic that dehydrates your body. Dehydration can lead to much thicker mucus, so it’s better to avoid caffeine and drink water instead.latte

3. Meat

Meat and eggs contain a lot of protein, which can cause a build-up of mucus in your throat. While fish and poultry are relatively safer, high-fat red meats and processed meats especially cause this problem, so try to buy meats that are organic and have not been processed.

4. Fatty Fried Foods

Fats and oils that have been derived from animal products, like butter, lard and omega-6 fatty acids, can cause you to produce more mucus. While you have a cold or cough, avoid these fats and stick to vegetable oils instead.

5. Grainy nuts

While dry roasted nuts do not cause mucus, oily nuts do. Seeds, legumes, rice and oatmeal also instigate mucus production, as do foods like pasta, bread and processed cereals.dry fruits

6. Histamine rich foods

Histamine is a substance that helps your body fight allergies. If you are already unwell, eating foods that contain histamine can cause you to produce more mucus. These foods include eggs, tomatoes, spinach, avocados, mushrooms, dried fruits, alcohol, yogurt, vinegar and fermented foods. Other foods like strawberries, shellfish, papayas, pineapple, bananas and chocolate don’t contain histamine, but they do cause your body to produce it, resulting in more mucus.

Now that you know all foods that you considered the essence of winters can actually be harmful for your health, how about avoiding them when you see the symptoms of illness approaching you?

And if you really want to nosh on healthy food, visit foodpanda’s salads and snacks section to order your favourites this winter which we’ll deliver right at your doorstep – hot and fresh!
